5 Advanced Excel Tips You Need to Know

Since its conception in 1987, Microsoft Excel has grown to be one of the most popular spreadsheet programs around. Recent data suggests that more than 750 million people use it across the world.

Whether you use Excel for work or in your free time, odds are there are some advanced Excel hacks that you’re not aware of. These can help you work more efficiently, as well as make the spreadsheets you create more intuitive.

So what do you need to know?

Keep reading to learn about five Excel tricks you can use to become a pro.

1. Use Some of the Many Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are one of the easiest ways to save time while working. Some of the most popular shortcuts include:

  • Ctrl + A: Select all data
  • Ctrl + Home: Take you to your first data cell
  • Ctrl + End: Take you to your last data cell
  • Ctrl + Minus Sign: Gives you different delete options

There are many other shortcuts you can use, but these are some of the most useful ones. With time, they’ll become muscle memory!

2. Delete Duplicated Data Rows

If you want to delete duplicated rows in your sheets, select the applicable data ranges. Usually, using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A is an easy way to do this.

Click the ‘Data’ option at the top, then choose ‘Remove Duplicates’. If your data has a header row, select ‘My data has headers’. Click OK, and you’re all set!

3. Use the Same Heading When Printing Multiple Sheets

Are you printing multiple sheets? If you are, adding the same header to each of them can be a hassle. Luckily, Excel provides you with an easy way to use the same header each time.

Go to ‘Page Layout’, then ‘Print Tiles’, then use the ‘Rows to Repeat at Top’ category to choose the rows you want on each sheet.

4. Name Different Ranges

If you have a lot of different rows on your sheets, adding names to different ranges provides you with an easy way to refer back to them when you need to.

To do so, go to ‘Formulas’, then ‘Create from Selection’. Choose ‘Top Row’ and give them names.

5. Import Tables From the Web

If there’s a table on the web you want to view in Excel, go to ‘Data’, then ‘From Web’. Enter the website URL, then click ‘Go’. Select ‘Click to select this table’, ‘Import’, then ‘Go’.

You can even import spreadsheets from other programs. Check out this guide to learn how to C# export to Excel.
